A stretched timing chain
We often get asked, how a stretched Timing Chain looks like on a engine and if you can see a difference. Unfortunately without physically comparing it next to a new chain its not possible to know how far its stretched.
One thing we always look out for is how far the chain tensioner is out, in this case it was fully extended and making a noise on startup. It also had a slight misfire on startup.
This particular car came in due to the dreaded Cam and Crank Sensor Correlation Error at 200 000km on the ODO.A bit more use and the repairs could get serious and much more expensive.
Full new Timing Chain kit, with guides and sprockets was fitted, together with a routine service with the correct engine oil.
If you hear a rattle sound for a second or so on startup, its reason to be concerned.
